Joy Vey
“She was skimming the earth with folk dance shapes turned liquid… It slowly dawns on us that she is dancing to unwind the nightmare on the other side of the border with Palestine, to unwind all she has learned as an Israeli-American.”

In Joy Vey, I confront my Zionist legacy and its mythologies by rearranging beloved Israeli folk songs and dances to face the Nakba.
Though our views differ, I thank my parents and grandparents for their willingness to reexamine and reimagine Jewish ritual and culture, and for teaching me to do the same.
